The Leverhulme/British Small Research Academy Grant 2025 is now officially open for applications. Postdoctoral scholars (or equivalent) based in the UK can receive up to £10,000 in funding to support primary research through this esteemed and fiercely competitive program.
What is the purpose of the grant?
With more applications and awards than any other funding source, these Small Research Grants are one of the British Academy’s premier opportunities. Uses of the grant include
- Direct research costs (e.g. travel, archival access, equipment, etc.)
- Setting up research visits or workshops with partners
- Activities related to research development or project planning
Note: Standard computer equipment, salary coverage, and teaching replacement are not eligible for grants. Ten thousand pounds is the maximum grant amount.
Who Can Apply for a Scholarship?
- Postdoctoral or equivalent researchers ordinarily resident in the UK
- Scholars employed at UK institutions or independent researchers
- Co-applicants can be from anywhere in the world, but the lead applicant must reside in the UK.

Application Timeline
The application process for the British Academy/Leverhulme Small Research Grants 2025 opened on 9 April 2025, and all applications must be submitted by the deadline of 4 June 2025 at 17:00 BST. Successful applicants will be able to begin their projects from the earliest start date of 22 September 2025. The grants are tenable for a period ranging from 1 to 24 months, depending on the scope and timeline of the proposed research project.
