Are you ready to step into the halls of European decision-making and gain invaluable work experience at the heart of the EU? The Council of the European Union has officially announced the opening of applications for its February 2026 paid traineeship program, inviting students and graduates from around the world to apply!

Concerning the Council Traineeship Initiative

The Council of the European Union traineeship is a 5-month paid training program that offers a behind-the-scenes look at how EU decisions are made. Held in Brussels, this program gives selected candidates a unique opportunity to work within the General Secretariat of the Council (GSC) in either policy-related or support teams.

There are two (02) application rounds each year:

  • February intake: 16 February–15 July
  • September intake: 1 September–31 January.

Who Can Apply?

Whether you come from law, economics, international relations, communications, IT, translation, or public administration, there’s a place for you!

Main Eligibility Criteria:

  • Nationality: EU citizens (main program); international students with disabilities (positive action program)
  • Education:
    • Main program: A completed university degree
    • Positive action: At least a third-year student at a university or college
  • Languages: Proficient in English or French (C1 level minimum) and a strong command of at least two official EU languages
  • Experience: No more than 6 weeks of prior experience in any EU institution or body
  • Age: No age limit
  • Disability Program: Requires documentation of disability.

What Will You Do as a Trainee?

Trainees are embedded into real teams, gaining experience in both policy and administrative roles. You can choose two preferred domains when applying.

Typical tasks include:

  • Assisting with EU meetings and drafting minutes
  • Research and data analysis
  • Supporting events and communication campaigns
  • Translating key documents
  • Attending Council preparatory bodies
